Why Your Eyes May Feel Dry, Sore or Watery
Dry eye syndrome is a common condition where your eyes either don’t make enough tears (sometimes called ‘aqueous-deficient dry eye’) or the tears don’t work as they should and evaporate too quickly (known as ‘evaporative dry eye’). Some people have a combination of both.
When this happens, your eyes can’t stay properly lubricated and protected.
As a result, they may feel dry, gritty, sore, watery, tired, or sensitive to light. You may also experience intermittent blurring of your vision or sometimes feel that you just can’t see as clearly as you’d like to.
Dry eyes can happen for many reasons, such as changes in the quality of your tears (unstable or too salty), inflammation of the eyelids and/or surface of the eye, or problems with the nerves that control tear production.
As much as 80% of all cases of DES are due to evaporative dry eyes, which is caused by an underlying condition called Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD).
Blocked Glands - The Root Cause of Most Cases of DES
Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) is a common condition where the tiny oil glands (Meibomian glands) in your eyelids don’t work properly. These glands normally produce the oils that keep your eyes comfortable and stop your tears from evaporating too quickly.
When the glands get blocked and/or the oils become poor quality, your eyes can feel dry, gritty, sore, watery, or tired, especially at the end of the day.
When the tears evaporate too quickly because of MGD, your tears become too salty – this increased saltiness of the tears creates a “cycle of inflammation”, which causes damage to the eyelids, the meibomian glands, and the surface of the eyes, resulting in the common symptoms and frustrations of DES.
As much as 80% of all cases of DES are caused by MGD.
Common Reasons Your Eyelid Glands Stop Working Properly
Meibomian gland dysfunction is a complex condition, with multiple underlying risk factors including:
- Age – the likelihood of having MGD increases with age
- Hormonal changes – the menopause and androgen deficiency contribute to MGD
- Diet – a diet low in omega-3 and high in omega-6 can contribute to MGD
- Digital devices – use of digital devices such as smartphones, tablets, laptops, PCs and games-consoles is associated with a reduced blink rate, leading to less emptying of the meibomian glands and increased gland blockages
- Contact lens wear – wearing contact lenses is a known risk factor for MGD and DES
- Skin conditions – acne rosacea, atopic (allergic) dermatitis and seborrhoeic dermatitis are known risk factors for MGD
- Systemic medications – medications such as antiandrogens, retinoids and antidepressants can contribute to MGD
- Topical medications – long-term use of eyedrops to treat ocular hypertension/glaucoma or other chronic eye conditions can lead to “blepharitis medicamentosa”, an inflammatory condition affecting the eyelids and meibomian glands caused either by the preservatives in commonly-used eyedrops or the active ingredient in the medicine itself
- Demodex – microscopic critters that live in the eyelash follicles (Demodex follicularis) or the meibomian glands (Demodex brevis), these natural inhabitants are associated with MGD and inflammation of the eyelids, often causing the eyelid margins to feel itchy. They have a lifespan of 2-3 weeks and are notoriously difficult to treat
- Make-up/cosmetics – many ingredients in make-up, removers, anti-aging creams, eyelash extensions, and common cosmetic treatments can be harmful to the delicate skin of the eyelids and eyelashes, increasing the risk of DES and MGD
What Can Help Dry Eyes Feel Better?
Historically, DES/MGD has been managed with a range of “at home” treatments/remedies, including:
- Hot compresses – with either a hot flannel or in more recent times a microwaveable heat-bag
- Eyelid “scrubs” – cleansing of the eyelids to remove debris from the eyelashes and lid margins, either with a solution of diluted baby shampoo or bicarbonate of soda; thankfully, better products are now available, which are gentler and more effective
- Artificial tears/lubricants – to supplement your own tears to lubricate, soothe and protect the surface of the eye; there are now many options available, but not all eyedrops are created equally.
Other treatment options include omega-3 dietary supplements, oral antibiotics (e.g doxycycline), anti-inflammatory (steroid) eyedrops, and eyedrops that suppress the immune system.
Oral antibiotics, steroid and immunosuppressant medications have potential undesirable side-effects and cannot be supplied by most Optometrists in England, unless they are licensed as Independent Non-medical Prescribers (look for the suffix DipTp (IP) after the Optometrist’s name; Anthony Clarke, EyeRevive’s Lead Optometrist is a registered Independent Non-Medical Prescriber).
Traditional “at-home” remedies listed above (hot compresses, lid hygiene practices, and artificial tears) are time-intensive, are a bit of a “faff”, cumbersome, and take up to 6-8 weeks or longer to produce any noticeable improvement in symptoms.
Consequently, many people start-off with good intentions but usually stop the home remedies after a few weeks, or do them on an inconsistent basis.
Artificial tears and lubricants may temporarily relieve the symptoms of DES, but they do not treat the root cause of the problem.
The good news is, with the right treatment from EyeRevive at Clarke & Roskrow, your eye comfort, vision, and quality of life can be greatly improved.
Why should I choose EyeRevive instead of seeing my GP or using over-the-counter drops?
Most people with dry eyes are given short-term fixes like artificial tears — but these don’t treat the root cause. EyeRevive is different. We take the time to fully understand why your eyes feel like they do, discover if you actually have DES, then create a personalised plan to improve your eye comfort for the long-term.

EyeRevive Soothe & Restore - Gentle light therapy to recharge your eyelid glands
- A mask is placed gently over your closed eyes to treat the eyelids and surrounding area
- The mask delivers either soothing red or blue light, each chosen for its unique benefits:
🔴 Red Light – the “energy recharger”
- Stimulates the meibomian glands to get them re-energised and working properly again – works like recharging your phone battery
- Boosts circulation and helps your eyelids’ natural oil glands work more efficiently
- Leaves your eyes feeling refreshed and comfortable
🔵 Blue Light – the “deep clean”
- The blue light mask gives your eyelids a cleansing boost
- Helps reduce the build-up of Demodex (tiny skin-dwellers that naturally live in the meibomian glands and the eyelash follicles) as well as reducing the number of bacteria on the eyelids and lashes
- When there are too many, they can upset the balance of your eyes and cause irritation and inflammation
- Blue light calms this imbalance, supporting healthier eyelids and long-lasting comfort
For best results we’d recommend a course of Soothe & Restore with both red and blue masks. A complete course involves 3-4 treatments over a 6-8 week period.
EyeRevive Sunlight - Short bursts of intense sunlight that reset your eyelids
- Quick, gentle flashes of light are applied just beneath your eyes while you wear protective goggles
- Think of it as short bursts of intense sunlight that reset your eyelids to work properly again, reduce inflammation, and remove Demodex
- The whole process takes under 10-minutes and feels comfortable and calming
⚡ EyeRevive Sunlight – a “reset button” for your eyes:
- Encourages your eyelids to work in a more natural, balanced way
- Helps to calm redness, reduce inflammation, and improve the quality and quantity of your own tears
- Supports long-term comfort, many clients notice clearer, fresher, more comfortable eyes over time
A complete course of Sunlight involves 3-4 sessions over a period of 8-12 weeks.
EyeRevive Deluxe - Combined therapy for maximum comfort and relief
For the best results, we often combine both therapies — Soothe & Restore and Sunlight — into one tailored programme, EyeRevive Deluxe.
- Multi-pronged approach to target the root causes of discomfort
- Balances cleansing, soothing, and long-term reset
- Designed as our premium offering for lasting comfort and healthier eyes
A complete course of EyeRevive Deluxe includes 3-4 sessions of Soothe & Restore and Sunlight over a period of 8-12 weeks. Deluxe also includes up to 2 EyeRevive Exfoliation and EyeRevive Lid Massage treatments if required.
EyeRevive Exfoliation - A deep cleanse for the eyelids
A deep-clean of the eyelids and eyelashes to remove the “biofilm” that builds-up on the lid margins over time and unblock the openings of the meibomian glands.
Think of it like the eyelid equivalent of a “scale and polish” with the dental hygienist.
- Eyelid exfoliation – a gentle but thorough & targeted removal of the eyelid biofilm (a bit like an electric toothbrush, but for the eyelids!)
- Quick and comfortable – the oscillating soft tip of the device comfortably removes the biofilm in just four minutes (one minute treatment per eyelid)
- Enhanced results – EyeRevive Exfoliation is often paired with our other treatments, helping to get better results and relief from the symptoms of DES.
EyeRevive Lid Massage - Let the oils flow!
Massaging the eyelids helps to get the thickened meibomian oils out of the glands and onto the surface of the eye, where they belong!
- Oil quality – we assess the quality of the oils e.g. runny (good) vs. buttery/toothpaste-like (not good)
- Expressibility – how easy is it to release the oils from the glands e.g. minimal massage needed (good) vs. greater massage needed (not good).
EyeRevive Lid Massage is not offered as a stand-alone treatment; it is included in the EyeRevive Discovery Consultation as well as the EyeRevive Deluxe treatment plan.
You may be advised to have EyeRevive Gland Massage to help improve the results of the EyeRevive Soothe & Restore and/or EyeRevive Sunlight treatments.

How long does an EyeRevive treatment take?
Each session lasts around an hour from start to finish. There’s no downtime — you can return to work or drive straight afterwards.
You’ll receive step-by-step guidance before your first session so you can relax and enjoy the experience.
How many EyeRevive sessions will I need?
Everyone is different, but for EyeRevive Soothe & Restore most people benefit from a course of 3–4 sessions over 8–12 weeks; many people notice improvements after the second or third treatment, and some even feel relief after their first session.
For EyeRevive Deluxe the combined treatments are spread over a 10-12 week period.
At your Discovery Consultation, we’ll recommend a plan that suits your symptoms and lifestyle.

I’m already on the C&R EyeCare Plan - is EyeRevive covered by this?
That’s a great question, and one we expect many of our loyal EyeCare Plan members to ask.
EyeRevive is a completely new clinical service dedicated to diagnosing, treating, and managing Dry Eye Syndrome. It’s separate from our core EyeCare Plan, which focuses on your regular vision assessments, eye health checks, and fabulous eyewear.
Although you’ll still be looked after by the same friendly team, in the same calm and familiar surroundings, EyeRevive involves advanced technology, specialist equipment, and dedicated clinic time focused solely on dry eye therapy. Because of this, it isn’t covered by the EyeCare Plan, and fees are payable separately.
For now, EyeRevive is available exclusively to our EyeCare Plan members — so you’ll be among the first to benefit from this exciting new service.
If your eyes often feel dry, tired, or irritated, we’d love to help. Book your EyeRevive Discovery Consultation to explore what’s really causing your discomfort and how we can help you feel better again.
What’s the difference between the EyeRevive Soothe & Restore, Sunlight, and Deluxe treatments?
– Soothe & Restore uses gentle red light to warm and soothe the eyelids, stimulating the meibomian glands to work better and helping the glands release their natural oils; the blue light has antibacterial effects as well as killing Demodex, tiny critters that live in the meibomian glands and lash follicles and are an often-overlooked cause of DES/MGD. Both therapies are based on low-light level photobiomodulation therapy (LLLT)
– Sunlight uses precise flashes of regulated intense pulsed light (IRPL) to reduce eyelid inflammation and improve meibomian gland function. An added bonus is that it can help stimulate collagen formation in the skin around the eyes, leading to reduced wrinkles, crow’s-feet, and blemishes.
– Deluxe combines both treatments for the most complete, long-lasting results.
We’ll help you decide which treatment is right for you during your Discovery Consultation.
Is EyeRevive a cure for Dry Eye or MGD?
Dry Eye and MGD are chronic (long-term) conditions — a bit like gum disease or tooth decay. Just as you can’t cure tooth decay and gum disease, DES and MGD can’t be cured once and for all either, but you can manage them effectively with the right routine. Think of it like caring for your teeth: daily care at home and regular professional treatments can help maintain a good comfort score, or can help to improve your comfort score if you’re already experiencing symptoms.
EyeRevive helps you build that routine — starting with your Discovery Consultation.
Can EyeRevive help with other problems?
EyeRevive could also be useful for the following situations:
- Prolonged use of eyedrops – Irritation associated with eyedrops used for treating glaucoma, ocular hypertension, or other chronic eye diseases.
- Pre-cataract surgery – reduce the risk of surgery being cancelled because of excessive biofilm and/or Demodex, or because of inflammation/infection
- Pre-cataract surgery – experience better post-surgical vision outcomes with an EyeRevive treatment plan before surgery.
- Post-cataract surgery – some people experience DES symptoms after having cataract surgery. EyeRevive treatments could help to improve eye comfort after cataract surgery.
- Prolonged/heavy screen/digital device use – “computer vision syndrome” can have similar symptoms to DES/MGD and is often associated with a reduced blink-rate and therefore a poor tear layer and low-level inflammation.
- Contact lens wearers – wearing contact lenses can be a risk factor for DES/MGD. Treatment with one of our EyeRevive therapies can help improve contact lens comfort and reduce the likelihood of people giving-up wearing contact lenses.
- Eyelid styes and chalazia – people with MGD can be more susceptible to having styes (an infected eyelash follicle) and chalazia (a swelling of the eyelid caused by blocked meibomian glands); EyeRevive can help resolve styes and chalazia as well as reduce the risk of them returning by improving the overall hygiene and functioning of the eyelids and meibomian glands.
Who can have EyeRevive treatments?
EyeRevive is suitable for most adults aged 18 and over who suffer from dry, tired, or irritated eyes. We’ll carry out a detailed medical questionnaire and eye assessment at your Discovery Consultation to confirm suitability before starting any treatment.
If you’re unsure whether EyeRevive is right for you, book a Discovery Consultation — it’s the safest way to find out.
Are there any side effects?
Side effects are rare and usually very mild — perhaps a little warmth or redness on the skin that fades quickly. There’s no downtime, and you can go straight back to your day afterwards, including driving and wearing makeup if you wish.
You’ll be given clear guidance before every treatment so you know exactly what to expect.
How long do the results last?
That depends on the cause of your dry eye and how well you maintain your eye health afterwards. Most people enjoy relief for several months after their initial course, with top-ups recommended once or twice a year for ongoing comfort.
We’ll design a personalised maintenance plan to help keep your eyes feeling their best.
Your journey to lasting eye comfort starts here – take the quiz and discover your eye comfort score.
Will I still need to use eyedrops?
In most cases, yes — but you’ll likely need them less often. EyeRevive aims to restore your eyes’ natural balance so you’re not constantly relying on drops to get through the day. You may also need other “at-home” remedies to support your EyeRevive treatments – just like continuing to brush your teeth twice daily between visits to the dentist.
At your Discovery Consultation, we’ll review your current products and “home-remedies” and create a tailored management plan for you.
Say goodbye to “hit & miss” DIY treatments – book your EyeRevive Discovery Consultation today
Can I just use a heated eye mask at home instead?
A home mask can help, but it often doesn’t reach the right temperature or stay warm long enough to unblock the glands properly. There is also some emerging evidence that applying direct heat to the eyelids with heated eye masks may encourage more inflammation. EyeRevive uses controlled medical-grade light to deliver the ideal heat to stimulate the eyelid gland safely and evenly — something at-home options can’t achieve.
If home remedies haven’t worked for you, it’s time for a more effective approach — start with your Discovery Consultation.

Why Your Eyes May Feel Dry, Sore or Watery

When the glands get blocked and/or the oils become poor quality, your eyes can feel dry, gritty, sore, watery, or tired, especially at the end of the day.

More About EyeRevive

Your EyeRevive Treatments
EyeRevive Sunlight – a “reset button” for your eyes:

EyeRevive - Frequently Asked Questions
Understanding DES and MGD
Is EyeRevive a cure for Dry Eye or MGD?
Dry Eye and MGD are chronic (long-term) conditions — a bit like gum disease or tooth decay. You can’t “cure” them once and for all, but you can manage them effectively with the right routine. Think of it like caring for your teeth: daily care at home and regular professional treatments keep things healthy and comfortable.

About EyeRevive Treatments
What is EyeRevive?
EyeRevive is a complete care system for people with sore, dry, or tired eyes. It combines in-depth diagnosis with gentle, light-based therapies designed to restore comfort, reduce inflammation, and improve the natural tear film.
If you’re wondering whether EyeRevive could help you, start with our quick “Is EyeRevive for You?” quiz.
Are the EyeRevive light-based treatments safe?
Yes. Both our gentle “mask” (LLLT) and pulsed-light (IPL) treatments are medically approved and widely used worldwide for eye and skin health. They’re non-invasive, don’t touch the eye itself, and feel pleasantly warm.
They’re safe for most adults, though some people may not be suitable for IPL (for example, those with very dark skin tones or certain medical conditions). If that’s the case, we can offer LLLT instead.
We always carry out a detailed health and skin assessment before any treatment to make sure it’s safe and right for you.
Is EyeRevive painful or uncomfortable?
No — most people find the LLLT treatments relaxing! The light therapy feels gently warm and soothing, and some clients even fall asleep during the session.
During the IRPL treatment you may feel intense warmth for a split-second when each of the 10 pulses are applied to the skin – this is not painful or uncomfortable but is a unique sensation.
You can experience it for yourself — book your Discovery Consultation today.

Most people with dry eyes are given short-term fixes like artificial tears — but these don’t treat the root cause. EyeRevive is different. We take the time to fully understand why your eyes feel like they do, discover if you actually have DES, then create a personalised plan to improve your eye comfort for the long-term.
